May 2025 Legislative Update
Legislative Update: May 2025 – Advocacy in Action
As we enter a critical stretch in the legislative calendar, there are several key updates happening in and around Washtenaw County that directly impact the rental housing industry. Here’s what you need to know—and how you can get involved.
1. Ann Arbor’s Green Rental Housing Initiative – First Reading on May 5
The Ann Arbor City Council is holding the first reading of the proposed Green Rental Housing Initiative on Monday, May 5th. This proposed ordinance could significantly impact the cost and regulatory burden of operating rental housing in the city.
The Washtenaw Area Apartment Association is actively opposing this initiative, alongside our partners at the Greater Metropolitan Association of Realtors (GMAR). Many of our members will be speaking during public comment at the meeting to voice concerns about the unintended consequences this policy may have on housing affordability and small property owners.
If you haven’t already, we urge you to make your voice heard by submitting a letter directly to your City Council members using this tool provided by GMAR:

Join us in Lansing for PMAM's Annual Lobby Day on Wednesday, May 14th, where we’ll be meeting with 10 state legislators to advocate for our industry. Topics include rental housing legislation, zoning reforms, and preserving housing affordability.
Participation is free, and it's a powerful opportunity to directly connect with decision-makers. Whether you're a seasoned advocate or a first-time participant, we encourage you to attend and help represent the interests of our local rental housing providers.
